Academy Policies

Please read about our Academy policies prior to registering.

These following policies are in place to keep our Academy running efficiently throughout the year.  Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.

Auditions

Students and parents are encouraged to attend one audition session wherein they are able to meet at least one director and teacher and determine a course syllabus that is the best fit for the applicant. This session will be free of charge and students may be allowed to observe (or participate depending on the discretion of the teacher) one class.

After a successful Audition, registration is completed via a form and a non-refundable annual registration fee. At this time fees may be paid by cash or cheque addressed to one of the directors of BRT Academy.

Students may cancel their registration after one or two classes in which case fees other than the classes attended and the non-refundable annual fee will be returned.

Attendance and Tardiness –

Regular attendance is important for progress as classes are cumulative rather than sequential. There are no makeup classes for group lessons if at least one student in the group is present unless otherwise intimated (please see Class Cancellation policies).

In case of late arrivals, the teacher is not obligated to extend the lesson beyond the scheduled time.

Class Cancellation –

BRT Academy reserves the right to combine or cancel classes in the event of low attendance.

Classes for toddlers and children under 5 need not be made up and refunds will not be made.

In the event of inclement weather or other emergencies makeup classes may be scheduled.

Absence to a general class by student is required to be notified to the teacher at least 15 days in advance.  No refunds or credits will be given if not notified in advance as indicated.

Private lessons missed due to a teacher’s cancellation will be made up in the next available time slot mutually agreed with student. The option of a substitute teacher may be made available.

Cancellation of private lessons by students must be made a minimum of 24 hours before the class in order to qualify for a make up lesson. No refunds or credits will be given if a makeup class is missed.

For group classes, it is expected that students collaborate with each other or communicate with the teacher in the event that a student is absent to be prepared for any material that is missed.

Pick up /Drop Off, Parking –

When dropping off a student, please make sure the student has entered the class before you leave. As there are limited parking spots, if you are going to wait, please drive a short distance away and park as a courtesy to other parents and neighbors who may need parking spots.

Students will be allowed to leave the class only if accompanied by a parent or responsible adult previously notified by a parent to the instructor.\

Please pick up your children on time.  Parents are NOT ALLOWED to stay during the class time.  On the assessment date of every term, parents are allowed to watch the student’s progress. BRT Academy is not responsible for children once they leave the class.

Holidays –

The Dance Division of BRT Academy will be closed in the months of July, August and after mid of December.

Payment –

The Annual Registration fee is to be paid upon registration or at the beginning of each year. The fee is $15 per student and may be paid by cash or cheque in the name of one of the directors of BRT Academy.

In most cases performance rehearsals are counted as regular class and must be paid for as such. In rare cases, performance rehearsals count as special classes with heightened fees; for example, in the event that an auditorium or studio or costumes must be rented especially for that class there will be an additional fee.

Tuition schemes:

Semester – Fees are due on or before the 2nd week after an email or invoice has been issued.

An automatic late fee of $10 will apply if the fees are not paid in time.

Dress Code – for dance

It is very important for all students to adhere to the dress code for all dance classes. Teachers must be able to observe a student’s body movement clearly so they are better able to correct form and technique.

Beginners –

  • Any color top with loose-fitting pants or pyjama
  • Bare feet
  • Long scarf to be tied around waist
  • Hair to be tied back securely

Intermediate –

  • Any color top or Practice saree (preferred) with loose pants or pyjama
  • Bare feet
  • Long scarf to be tied around waist if not wearing practice saree
  • Hare to be tied back securely

Advanced

  • Salangai
  • Bare feet
  • Hair to be tied back securely
  • Salangai

Hygiene

Students should maintain a super sense of hygiene that takes into account the very close proximity to other people, the possibility of being judged (both literally judged in relation to other people and figuratively judged in a sideline-talk way) and maintaining your own wellness. Throw a travel pack of baby wipes, deodarant, a towel and something sprayable that smells good (use it often, but not too much).

Performances –

Students must attend all rehearsals for performances. All rehearsals are classes paid for via fees. Every class involves extensive review and corrections. It is the responsibility of each and every student involved in a performance to aid their school members in any way possible, whether by remembering lines or choreography across disciplines. Every performance is a team effort and must be treated as such. All students and teachers are requested to respect the effort of performers, whether in music or dance, while they are performing at a rehearsal.

If a student misses more than one rehearsal (for non-emergency reasons) the teacher reserves the right to replace that student in a performance. For dances choreographed in a group every student’s presence is critical. If a student fails to show up for practice the teacher reserves the right to alter the choreography to exclude that student or even to cancel the entire dance if it is deemed appropriate.

The opportunity to perform is a privilege. The teacher or director reserves the right to decide whether or not a student is ready to perform. As every performance is a mode of representing BRT Academy, unless a student exhibits the necessary excellence to uphold the standard of BRT Academy, a teacher or director has the final say in whether a student may or may not perform whether a production is an inhouse event or an event facilitated by a collaborating organization or individual.

For recitals, external performances, competitions or other events, parents and BRT Academy will share expenses toward hall rental, costumes, amenities or other budgetary concerns.

Competitions –

There are several annual competitions that are available to dance students. All competitions – groups, solos, duos etc are entered and adjudicated for marks. Any students participating in competitions are required to attend all extra rehearsals and lessons. 100% attendance at regular classes is also mandatory, and in order to participate in competitions, students must have passed at least the beginner level. Any student who is interested in participating in any competition must maintain at minimum 6 hours of practice per week.

Media use –

Any music or video given to students are meant for use solely at the discretion of BRT Academy of Dance and Music. To use any of the media outside of a BRT Academy sponsored or organized event, permission must be obtained from one of the directors of BRT Academy.

Performance videos –

Performance videos are not to be publicized in the social media unless or otherwise consent is given by one of the director of BRT Academy. This is to avoid copyright issues and to maintain integrity of choreography or musical composition. Students who do not adhere to this policy may be penalized if an instructor or director deems fit.

Behavior –

No disruptive behavior or misconduct will be tolerated. Unwillingness to comply will result in a student sitting out, being reprimanded or otherwise missing class with no refund. Please respect our teachers by not unnecessarily interrupting while they are teaching a class.

There will be no gum chewing at any BRT class.

BRT Academy reserves the right to reprimand, suspend or dismiss students at any time on the basis of their non-compliance with school policies.
